Is plug-in solar legal in the UK? What the 2026 rules actually say

What actually changed in April 2026

The UK wiring rules — the technical document that governs every electrical installation in the country — were updated with an amendment that came into force on 15 April 2026. For the first time, plug-in solar kits up to 800 watts of output are explicitly permitted on a standard household socket circuit.

Before this, plug-in solar sat in an awkward middle ground. Nothing said it was illegal — the kits were on Amazon, and there were probably tens of thousands of them quietly running in UK homes. But the wiring rules didn’t mention them, which meant electricians wouldn’t sign off installations, insurers weren’t sure how to treat them, and every guide had a “probably fine but check first” caveat. The 2026 update ended that ambiguity.

A second change kicks in on 27 August 2026: retail-sale rules formalise how kits must be labelled and sold in the UK. From that date, every plug-in solar kit sold in the UK must ship with clear labelling stating the 800 watt limit and be on a public register of tested equipment. This matters because some older stock on Amazon predates the register — technically usable until 27 August, but not legally saleable or plug-in-able after.

The 800 watt rule, in plain English

The 800 watt cap is on what the kit pushes into your home, not on the panels themselves. Panels can add up to 2,000 watts total; the inverter (the box between the panels and the socket) automatically holds output at 800 watts whenever the panels would produce more.

In practice a two-panel kit — each around 430 to 450 watts — is the sweet spot. That’s about 860-900 watts of panel capacity feeding an 800 watt cap. You get more electricity on cloudy days when panels aren’t hitting their peak, without wasting anything on sunny ones.

The 800 watt number matches the German rule that has been running since 2024. Germany installed roughly 800,000 plug-in kits in 2024 under exactly this cap, which gave the UK regulator a live case study to work from when drafting the 2026 update.

The three other conditions

Beyond the 800 watt output cap, the rules add three practical conditions:

  1. One kit per power circuit. Most modern UK homes have separate circuits for upstairs and downstairs sockets. You can have one plug-in kit on each circuit, but not two on the same one. In a typical three-bed home that means you could technically run two plug-in kits (one upstairs, one downstairs) — but that takes you to 1,600 watts total, which is more than most households can use without exporting.
  2. No batteries in the box. The plug-in rules explicitly exclude battery storage. If you want battery storage alongside plug-in solar, you buy a portable power station separately — the kit charges it during the day, and the battery independently powers your devices in the evening. No restriction on doing that; it just sits outside the plug-in scope.
  3. Kit must be on the tested-equipment register. A public list confirming the inverter has passed the safety tests. Every reputable brand (Anker, EcoFlow, Bluetti and similar) is on it. Some generic Amazon stock isn’t — check the listing or the box before you buy.

The one-page notification form

You plug the kit in first, then post the paperwork. Nobody has to approve anything — the form is just so the network operator’s model of the local grid stays accurate as more households add small generators.

  1. Find your network operator by entering your postcode at energynetworks.org.
  2. Download the notification form from their site — or check the box, because most kits ship with it pre-filled.
  3. Fill in your postcode, address, the reference number for your electricity meter (called the “MPAN” — top of your electricity bill), the model of your kit, and the date you plugged it in.
  4. Post within 28 days of plugging in. The operator confirms receipt in 4 to 6 weeks. That’s the whole process — no site visit, no fee.

What’s coming in 2027

Two consultations are open that would meaningfully change the shape of UK plug-in solar over the next 12 to 18 months:

  • Batteries in scope. The government has signalled it may consult on adding small home batteries (under 5 units of storage) to the plug-in rules in 2027. If that lands, plug-in solar becomes materially more useful for evening use — right now you have to buy a separate portable power station to get battery functionality.
  • Payment for extra electricity.Ofgem has an open consultation on extending the export-payment scheme (Smart Export Guarantee) to plug-in kits fitted with a smart meter. Right now plug-in kits don’t export to the grid (the inverter holds back when you don’t need what it’s producing), so they’re out of scope. Extending SEG would add £30 to £50 a year of income and shorten payback by 6 to 9 months.

What this means for you

For most UK homeowners, the practical implication of the 2026 changes is simple: you can buy a plug-in solar kit, plug it in, and not worry about the legal grey zone anymore. The one form you have to post is a formality; the network operator won’t come round to check anything.

If you rent or live in a flat, the changes matter more — plug-in solar is one of the very few ways to install solar without owning the roof. The 2026 update gives you a solid legal basis to point at if your landlord asks questions.
